Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about image metadata.
Is the Image Metadata Viewer free?
Yes! Image Metadata Viewer is completely free with no sign-up required. View metadata from as many images as you want — no daily limits, no hidden fees. All processing happens in your browser.
What is EXIF metadata?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) metadata is information embedded in image files by cameras and smartphones. It includes camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), capture date and time, GPS location, device model and more. This data is automatically stored when you take a photo.
Can this tool see GPS location from my photos?
Yes. If your photo has GPS data embedded (common with smartphone photos), the tool will display the latitude, longitude and altitude. This is why it is important to check your photos before sharing them — GPS data can reveal your home, workplace or travel locations.
What image formats are supported?
We support JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, TIFF, BMP, GIF and many RAW formats (CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG). The tool reads all embedded metadata from these formats, including EXIF, IPTC, XMP and ICC color profiles.
Can I remove metadata from my photos?
Yes. After viewing the metadata, you can use our companion EXIF Remover tool to strip all metadata from your image. This removes GPS data, camera information and other personal data — perfect for protecting your privacy before sharing photos online.
Is my image data safe?
Completely safe. Image Metadata Viewer runs entirely in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to any server — all metadata extraction happens locally on your device. There is no tracking, no data collection and no account required.
