Make Better GIFs
Expert tips for creating smooth, lightweight, and impactful animated GIFs.
Keep It Short
Aim for 15–30 frames. Longer GIFs create massive file sizes and may not load on slower connections. If you need more, consider using video instead.
Optimize Dimensions
640px wide is plenty for most web uses. Only go larger if the GIF will be displayed at full width. Smaller dimensions dramatically reduce file size.
Reduce Color Palette
GIF supports up to 256 colors. Reducing to 128 or 64 colors can halve file size with minimal visible difference, especially for simple graphics.
Remove Duplicate Frames
If consecutive frames are identical, remove the duplicates and increase the delay on the remaining frame. This saves significant file size.

GIF Maker Questions Answered
Everything you need to know about creating GIFs with Pixly.
How do I make a GIF from images?
Upload multiple images (JPG, PNG, WebP, or BMP), arrange them in the desired order, set the frame delay (speed), choose whether the GIF should loop, and click Create. Your animated GIF is generated instantly in your browser — no uploads, no waiting.
What is the best frame speed for a GIF?
For smooth animations, use 100–200ms (0.1–0.2 seconds) per frame. For a slideshow-style GIF, 500–1000ms works well. Faster speeds (50–80ms) create snappy, energetic animations. You can set a custom delay for each frame individually or apply one speed to all.
Can I create a GIF from a video?
Yes! Upload a short video clip (MP4, WebM, or MOV), and our tool extracts frames automatically. You can choose how many frames to extract, select the portion of the video to convert, and set the playback speed. The resulting GIF is generated entirely in your browser.
What is the maximum GIF size I can create?
Since all processing happens in your browser, the limit depends on your device's memory. Most modern devices can handle GIFs up to 50MB. For best results, keep your source images under 1920×1080px and limit to 50–100 frames. Larger GIFs may take longer to generate.
How do I reduce the file size of my GIF?
To reduce GIF size: use fewer frames (15–30 is usually enough), reduce dimensions (640px wide is plenty for web), limit the color palette (128 colors often looks fine), and avoid duplicate consecutive frames. Our tool shows the estimated file size before you download.
Can I add text or stickers to my GIF?
Text overlay support is coming soon! Currently, you can create animated GIFs from images and video frames with full control over speed, loop, and order. For adding text to individual frames before creating a GIF, use our Image Text Adder tool first, then upload those images here.
